.net Domain Registration

In our second part of the domain name post series we will discuss .net domain names and .net domain registration.

Today .net is one of the most popular generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) in the Domain Name System (DNS) after .com and .de – the extension de denotes Germany (Deutchland.) TLD extensions that represent countries use the ISO Standard Codes for the Representation of Names of Countries. The alpha-2 codes for all countries are available at iso.org.

.net Domain RegistrationThe .net extension comes from the word “network” as the original intention was that this extension should be used for networks, network related technologies like internet service providers and other networking infrastructure business, but no restrictions were placed on its use and now .net is a general purpose name available for anyone to register.

The .net extension has been in existence since January 1985 as one of the top level domains. The original Top Level Domains created then were .gov .edu .com .mil and .org as well as the use of the double letter ISO codes used for countries. The first .net domain name ever to exist was Nordu.net.

The .net domain TLD was created just over 28 and a half years ago and it recently passed the 15 million registered domain names mark. It has doubled in size since 2006 and nearly half its registered users are in the US. In 2011 it became the third most popular domain name extension and although .net is usually the alternative of first choice after .com, some 99.9% of all 6+ character .net domain names are still available; the average length of .net domain names operating on the web today is 12 letters.

.com Domain Registration

The .com domain name is the best recognized Top Level Domain (TLD) in the Domain Name System (DNS). The .com is an abbreviation of commercial as it was originally intended for commercial use, but this restriction was never regulated and has since disappeared entirely. Today .com domain registration is a simple and easy process, with anyone being able to register a new .com name.

The first .com domain registered was symbolics.com on the 15th March, 1985. Since then .com has grown into the largest of all the TLDs and a new .com is registered every six seconds. In December 2011 it was reported that 100 million .coms were registered and of the 147.6 million domains across the TLDs today, 111.3 million are .coms. This is an indication of the popularity and the trust invested in the .com address.

.com Domain RegistrationThe US Department of Defence originally administered the .com domain. They contracted this out as .com was being used mainly for non-military interests and in 1993 the National Science Foundation took over. Until 1999, there was a sole registrar for domain names, but this changed with the introduction of the shared registration system under the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

It is the competition created by this shared registration system that allows you, the end-user, to pick and choose what services you want and at what price. And while it was once a complex legal matter to transfer a domain name from one domain host to another, it is now a relatively simple procedure.

Internet .com competition reached its peak in 1997-2001, a time known as the dot-com bubble. The increased commercialization of the internet together with the arrival of the World Wide Web and the first internet browser was a time of intense speculation on the stock markets. This resulted in the failure of many internet companies, while others like Amazon.com weathered the period well and went on to prosper equally spectacularly.

Stallion Hosting offers affordable .com domain registration services, as well as many other TLDs including .co.za .net .org .info .biz .co.uk and many more.

How to Transfer International Domain Names

The question that we will be answering today is: How do I transfer my .com domain to Stallion Hosting.

The process of transferring international domain names such as .com, .net, .org, .info, etc is relatively easy, and this post will provide you with insight into the process. At Stallion Hosting we have made the process as simple and easy to use as possible.

Here are the steps you will need to follow in order to transfer your international domain names.

Step 1: Contact the current host and request the EPP Key Code or Domain Authorization Key.

What is an EPP code? or Authorization Key?

An EPP code or Authorization Key is a a code provided by the old registrar/hosting company and applies to international domain names (.com, .net, .org, .info, .mobi etc.)

Stallion Hosting requires this key in order to transfer your international domain from your previous host. You should be able to simply contact your previous host/registrar and ask for the code.

Step 2: Next, simply place your order for the transfer of the domain at StallionHosting.com

Here is a link to the Stallion Hosting Bulk Domain Transfer page: http://www.stallionhosting.com/domainchecker.php?search=bulktransfer

Step 3: Once the order has been placed simply pay for the invoice and then send Stallion Hosting the EPP code.

Step 4: Stallion Hosting will initiate the transfer process

Step 5: Lastly, please contact the previous registrar/host and tell them to accept the transfer.

Frequently Asked Question: Why is there a charge to transfer international domain names?

International domain name transfers such as .com .net .info etc work on a renewal system which means an extra year will be added to the existing time remaining on the domain name when it is transferred.

IMPORTANT: It can take anywhere from 5 – 7 days to transfer your international domain name.

Domain Name Registration – 5 Top Tips

When looking for a new domain name, no matter if it’s your first domain or your hundredth – there is always a time when finding an available domain name requires some creativity. Your domain name will be your virtual address online, basically your Internet identity.

Below are 5 of our top Domain Name suggestions or tips to keep in mind when doing a domain name search.

1. Try Keep it short

Although some domains have the possibility to be registered with as many as 63 characters, you have to keep in mind that people need to be able to remember your domain, and easily type it into their browser. Try to register the shortest name so that your customers and visitors will be able to remember and associate your domain with your businesses name, product or service. With .co.za domains (South African domains) the limit is 30 characters.

2. What Characters Can Be Used?

Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and dashes. Spaces and symbols are not allowed. Also, domain names are not case sensitive.

3. Brain Storm, Think Out of The Box

This process might require you to use your creative side and try a number of different combination’s, you could also try various word placements etc.

4. Secure Your Brand – One May Not Be Enough

Sometimes, it isn’t a bad idea to register several similar domain names or several domain name types. If you have “yourname.com”, you could also register “yourname.net” so no one else takes it. You can register your full company name and a shorter, easier to remember version. Some people even register common misspellings of their company’s name. (You don’t need a separate Web page for each. Several domains can point to the same website by simply setting up a redirect). Stallion Hosting is an example of this as we own stallionhosting.com stallionhosting.net stallionhosting.co.za etc and visting any of these domains will simply redirect you to the main website at StallionHosting.com

5. Register Your Domain NOW!

Domain names are being registered and snatched up faster than you can imagine. If you have a domain name in mind then it is highly recommended that you jump and grab it, the feeling of losing a domain name to someone who catches the early bird and registers it before you is terrible. With Stallion Hosting you do not even need to have a website or hosting package as they offer a Free Domain Parking option, which allows you to secure your domain in your name and under your control at no extra cost.

For only R 80 per year for a .co.za domain name and R 109 per year for a .com domain name it is both affordable and easy for anyone to register and secure their businesses name, personal name etc.

Domain Name Transfers

Domain Name Transfers

The question of how a domain transfer works is asked now and then so I thought it would be a good idea to create a post and explain how the process works.

Transferring a domain name from one web host to another does not need to be a headache, and if the proper steps are followed then it should be an easy, smooth process.

To transfer a South African domain name (.co.za) is usually free, with Stallion Hosting there is no charge to transfer a .co.za domain name. If the correct procedure is followed and once the tickets are accepted then the transfer can be completed in 24 hours of being submitted.

Transferring international domain names such as .com .net .org .info etc is slightly more complicated and will usually take longer. When transferring an international domain name there is a charge, and the reason for this charge is that when you transfer an international domain an extra year gets added to the time remaining on your current registration.

For example if your  domain will expire in 6 months and you decide to transfer it to Stallion Hosting then you would place an order and pay the associated fee and then once the transfer is accepted and completed then your domain name would expire in 1 year and 6 months time.

If you are looking for a new hosting provider or want to transfer your domain names to your Stallion Hosting account then feel free to order a domain transfer from http://www.stallionhosting.com
